ভাগীরথীর তীরে দাঁড়ালেই চোখে পড়বে এক আশ্চর্য কুটির। গাছের ডালে বাঁশ, কাঠ ও খড় দিয়ে বানানো সেই ঘরেই সংসার শ্যামল সাধুর। প্রায় তিন দশক ধরে তিনি এখানেই বাস করছেন। আশেপাশের মানুষ তাঁকে ডাকে গাছ বাবা নামে।
বর্ষার সময় নদীর জল বেড়ে চারপাশ ডুবে যায় কোমর সমান জলে। সেই সময়ও গাছ বাবা আশ্রয় খোঁজেন না অন্য কোথাও। বরং প্রতিদিন ছোট্ট ডিঙি নৌকায় ভেসে নিজ কুটিরে ফেরেন। প্রতিদিন সামান্য ভাত রান্না করে ভগবানকে নিবেদন করেন, তারপর ভাত খেয়ে বাঁচেন। পাখিদের জন্যও খাবার আলাদা করে রাখেন তিনি।
স্থানীয়রা জানান, প্রয়োজনে সবাই সাহায্যের হাত বাড়ান। তবে সাধুবাবা নির্জনপ্রিয়। ভিক্ষে করে কিছুটা রোজগার করলেও টান তাঁর সেই কুটিরেই। শুধু গাছের উপর বাস নয়, তিনি নিজে গাছ লাগান ও যত্ন করেন সন্তানের মতো। এবারের ভরা ভাগীরথীর জলে তাঁর লাগানো গাছ ডুবে গেছে, যা নিয়ে যথেষ্ট উদ্বেগে আছেন তিনি।
