ফারাক্কা, ৩১ আগস্টঃ মুর্শিদাবাদ সুইমিং অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের উদ্যোগে এ বছরও শুরু হলো বিশ্বের দীর্ঘতম সাঁতার প্রতিযোগিতা। বৃহস্পতিবার ভোরে সুতির আহিরণ ঘাট থেকে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে সূচনা হয় এই ঐতিহাসিক প্রতিযোগিতার। ভোর পাঁচটায় বাঁশির শব্দে প্রতিযোগিতার উদ্বোধন করেন মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলা পরিষদের সভাধিপতি রুবিয়া সুলতানা। উপস্থিত ছিলেন জঙ্গিপুরের সাংসদ খলিলুর রহমান, প্রশাসনিক আধিকারিক, স্থানীয় জনপ্রতিনিধি ও বিভিন্ন ক্রীড়া সংগঠনের সদস্যরা।
প্রতিবছরের মতো এবারও প্রতিযোগিতায় দেশ-বিদেশের বহু সাঁতারু অংশ নেন। ৮১ কিলোমিটার দীর্ঘ প্রতিযোগিতার এই আসরে অংশগ্রহণকারীরা কেবল সাঁতারের দক্ষতাই নয়, শারীরিক সক্ষমতা ও মানসিক দৃঢ়তার দৃষ্টান্তও স্থাপন করেন। প্রতিযোগিতার শুরু থেকেই গঙ্গার দুই তীর জুড়ে উৎসবের আবহ সৃষ্টি হয়। সকাল থেকেই নদীর ধারে স্থানীয় বাসিন্দাদের ভিড় চোখে পড়ে। অনেকে পরিবার-পরিজন নিয়ে হাজির হন প্রতিযোগীদের উৎসাহ দিতে।
আয়োজক কমিটির পক্ষ থেকে জানানো হয়েছে, বিশ্বের দীর্ঘতম সাঁতার প্রতিযোগিতা হিসেবে এই আয়োজন বহু বছর ধরেই ক্রীড়াজগতের ক্যালেন্ডারে বিশেষ স্থান করে নিয়েছে। মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলার গর্ব এই প্রতিযোগিতা আজ আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনেও পরিচিতি পেয়েছে। ইতিমধ্যেই ইউরোপ ও দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার বিভিন্ন দেশ থেকেও সাঁতারুরা অংশগ্রহণে আগ্রহ দেখিয়েছেন।
